Mac, IC both make list of magazine’s top colleges
Both MacMurray College and Illinois College have been named to Washington Monthly magazine’s annual list of top colleges.
MacMurray College was ranked No. 18 among baccalaureate colleges. Illinois College was No. 25 among liberal arts colleges.
The ratings are part of the magazine’s September/October issue, which is available today. They are intended to measure how much a college or university gives back to the country. Rankings are based on such things as social mobility, research and service.
Illinois College — which moved up 63 places from last year — ranked high in the service category, placing first in service, staff, courses and financial aid support and fifth in community service.
This was the second year in the past three MacMurray was in the Washington Monthly’s Top 20. In 2011, MacMurray was ranked No. 14, slipped out of the top 20 in 2012 and returned this year.
“Washington Monthly’s ranking of MacMurray as No. 18 in the nation among baccalaureate colleges, reflecting how much the college ‘gives back to the country,’ underscores MacMurray’s commitment to prepare students to serve the United States of America and our Land of Lincoln,” MacMurray College President Colleen Hester said.
IC President Barbara Farley credited the rise in rankings to the dedication and work of the college’s students, faculty and staff.
“I am proud to see Illinois College recognized by such a well-regarded national publication as Washington Monthly. Our high ranking among liberal arts colleges recognizes Illinois College’s commitment to service, access to college, high quality educational experiences and student success,” she said.
